Interview with Dr. Nini , Thailand's top female triathlete

"By getting darker skin and not wearing make up all the time, I am perfectly confident being myself. I could not be more care less about Asian values where “pretty” means being super pale and looking like a doll." "I do WHAT I LOVE everyday and I am out there LIVING it!"

In this blog we have a special guest, Doctor Nichakarn Ruttanaporn, who would talk about her background before becoming a full time triathlete.

How does it feel as Thailand's top female triathlete?

How does she prepare herself mentally for races and how does she define “success” and “failure”?

What are her thoughts on competing at 2015 and 2016 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, Zell Am See and Mooloolaba?

All those questions are just about to be answered in this blog of TCtriathlon.
Let's dive in!

TC: Please introduce yourself

Nini: Hi everyone. My name is Nichakarn Ruttanaporn , as known in triathlon community as Dr. Nini. I graduated from University of Leicester as a Doctor of Medicine in 2015 and now I'm a full time triathlete. How crazy is that!

My career highlights are winning Laguna Phuket Triathlon “Thai Champion” title three years in a row (2016-2018), placing first in my age-group at IM 70.3 Taiwan and second woman overall at IM 70.3 Bangsaen. Those are my proudest moments so far in my triathlon career.

TC: What is your goal in 2019?

Nini: My personal goal is probably different from many people. Every day, I train to become stronger and a better athlete than yesterday and that’s my real ultimate goal.

Training sessions and races are my stepping stones towards self-improvement. I am still very new to the sport and still have a lot to learn.

I never really train for a single or specific race. There are so many factors that could have gone wrong on the race day and some are uncontrollable. If you are not getting the expected result then it could make you think that you “fail” or demotivated you.

So, for me it is more important to keep my focus on a bigger picture and the progress I have made rather than just one single performance. It is really important to appreciate the improvements, no matter how big or small.

For example, I am happy I could drop my 100m pool time…maybe just one or two second but then it became ten over six months or I could hold a faster pace for a little longer on the run.

My 2019 (and forever) ultimate goal is very simple; to “be the best athlete I can be.”

TC: Kindly share your thoughts and advices for newcomers, beginners and women who would give triathlon a try.

Nini: I would like to invite you all to start doing triathlon. Nobody is too old or too young for the sport. Everybody can do it with proper and suitable training.

Being a triathlete has helped me definitely build up my confidence. As a small woman, I am proud to show that I am “strong” (well stronger than people perceive). This does not mean having big muscles or crazy superpower. Triathlon gives me chance to prove my toughness both physically and mentally.

Furthermore, I find that training and racing allows me to truly be myself and express my personality. My competitive nature makes me keep challenging myself to reach the next levels.

I am sure this could be beneficial to others too so I absolutely would like you to give triathlon a try.

Many people said (more like criticized) that I am getting darker skin but I never think of it a negative thing. For me it is more important to focus on sport and living my life the way I want to. I will not stay in the shade just simply to get their approvals!

With a darker skin tone and not wearing make up all the time, I am perfectly confident being myself. I could not be more care less about Asian values where “pretty” means being super pale and looking like a doll."

"I do WHAT I LOVE everyday and I am out there LIVING it!" That sums up my thoughts to all ladies and gentlemen out there. ☺.

TC: Please share your experience about training with under the squad run by TriSutto

Nini: Luckily, I got a chance to train with world-class squad, including top Olympians and professional long-course triathletes (and IRONMAN world champion!). I am so grateful to once had a lifetime opportunity to train with Coach Brett Sutton who is famously known as a world class triathlon coach.

I attended two of the training camps per year. During the first few months of the year which is winter in Europe, I went to an Australia-based camp in Coolum Beach, Sunshine coast.

I stayed there for 2-3 months for training. The training plan was given to me day by day. I never knew what I would be up to for my next session until I finished my current session. Then, I would receive my next task of the day.

I normally train 2-3 times per day. My easy day consisted of morning swim and 45-min bike ride at lunchtime and a short run in evening. My hard day would be triple run; morning, afternoon and evening. For Thai people, we may think it is crazy to run at noon but I think it is really a great training session for mental strength.

In IRONMAN or 70.3 races, we always have to run when we are very tired from swimming and cycling. I think it is a great chance to train my mind using these difficult days.

My training with TriSutto was not like anything you have read in any book. My coach will analyse individual's strengths and weaknesses then plan the session from those. My friends would have different training plan…we didn’t even get the same day off so we couldn’t go out. I ended up staying home and rest without leaving my bed.

One of the most difficult sessions was “7 km run up-down hills to the pool and swim 4 km”. Then I thought the session was completed so I packed my gears and prepared to jump in the car back home with the coach. Suddenly, I was told to put running shoes on and run back. I was speechless!

It was that kind of days that has given me the confidence of what my body is capable of and mental strength. I did not know at the time but I was given some good weapons to use in the war.

When I was racing IM 70.3 Taiwan, I did not have the swim I hoped for and was faced with unfavorable conditions on the bike. I did not feel good at all. It was more like a battle of the mind. I thought of difficult sessions I was given and knew I was more than strong enough to hold it together. I finished with the best run I ever had and won my age group.

From this I learnt that was not only the body that needs to be trained but the mind too. I would say the most common training mistakes people make are neglecting mental training and staying disciplined. Those are also the key parts of the game.

While I am not at training camp, my coach and me are in contact everyday. It’s important to give a daily feedback and we work out what to do tomorrow from there. All I need to get the job done are a swimming pool , turbo trainer (Skylane sometimes) and a place to run.

Then during European summer, many athletes and coaches are gathering up for a training camp in St. Moritz, Switzerland. This is one of the place training ground for altitude training. I found training at high altitude is beneficial as the body is forced to work harder by thinner air so it undergoes many adaptations for endurance performance.

In the Alp, it is a real thing! We pretty much swim/bike/run all day. The workloads are huge and usually I do not have enough energy for anything else apart from train, eat and sleep!

By getting to train along side world-class athletes, this really has inspired me to get better and hopefully will be able to compete in international level.

TC: In your past two 70.3 world champs, what do you learned and do you think Thai people can compete with world-class triathlete?

Nini: From my experience competing at 70.3 world championship in 2015 at Zell am see, Austria and 2016 at Mooloolaba, Australia.

The courses were quite difficult, especially bike course. You need to be solid in all three disciplines. And everyone there was super strong!

I am still far from competing at a professional level but it is still important for me to put out my best game in the World Championship. Since we have no professional athletes, I felt the responsibility of representing my country, Thailand.

I want to make sure that triathlon world knows that the sport is developing in Thailand. It is still a long way for us but hopefully one day we will have athletes racing on the professional stage.

And yes I am very proud to represent my country again in Ironman World Championship 70.3 Nice, 2019!!
